God's truth for today's world

Today we are honoring Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. President Ronald Reagan designated the first National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday on January 22, 1984. The day was inaugurated to not honor, but draw attention to the evil Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion on demand on January 22, 1973. Today, January 22, 2017, we have had 44 years of legalized abortion in America. Over 59 million unborn babies have been murdered by abortion since 1973.

Abortion ends the lives of about 1 million unborn children in America every year. More innocent children are put to death every day, about 3000, then died in the 9/11 attacks. Yet, most people, including most Christians hardly give abortion a thought. It’s just one of many problems we have in the country, people think. Why should we get worked up about it?

Today, we’re going to talk about “Responding to Abortion.” We want to be clear on what God’s Word teaches about abortion. Then we want to discover how we should respond to it in our day and in our city. God is the author of all life. He is the only one with the authority to both give and take life. As people, we are to value the lives of all people created in God’s image, including the unborn.

You would think that Christians would be universally opposed to abortion, yet the majority of women who have abortions identify as being Christians. 76% of women who have had an abortion said that their church had no influence on their decision to abort. In a recent survey, only 10% of Protestant pastors preached a prolife message in the past year.

So, today, we’re going to look at the topic of abortion in greater detail. My goal is that each person here would be convinced of the importance of being pro-life in their own lives and families. Not only would you be convinced, but God wants to use you to persuade those you know and talk to to also be pro-life in their talk and actions. The eternal destinies of people hang on their response to the issue of abortion.

The church needs to lead the fight for those who cannot defend themselves. The fate of nations hangs on their response to the unseen holocaust of abortion. In the next few years, abortion will once again be the center of violent struggle in our nation. A struggle between those who value all human life and those who fight for the right to murder their own children. In order to prepare us for what lies ahead, we are going to look at three questions today that will help us to respond to abortion in a God-honoring way.

027_a_washdcThe Presidential election campaign of 2016 has been one of the most interesting and frustrating campaigns in memory. When the dust settled from the primaries, we ended up with two candidates. Each representing one of the two major parties. Many Christians are confused and distressed about how they should vote. They rightly reason that neither candidate would qualify as a pastor of a Bible-believing church.

Many still have no idea who they will vote for. Others have decided not to vote for anyone. Yet others are debating whether to vote for a third-party candidate or write-in a candidate. Even among Christian leaders, there is great confusion and even double-mindedness, with leaders switching their views back and forth. Emotion drives more of the rhetoric than a biblical analysis of a Christian citizen’s responsibility. So, this post will address a Christian citizen’s responsibility to vote for President from a biblical perspective.

While growing up in Ohio, Sarah Mourer kept a secret she refused to divulge to anyone: she felt like a boy trapped in the wrong body.

Although those feelings eventually dissipated, the sensation of gender confusion and being different didn’t.

“I felt like something was terribly wrong with me,” Mourer says.

On the surface, Sarah seemed to have it all together as a straight-A student who finished first in her class. No one at the local Assembly of God church she and her family attended had a clue that the girl involved for three years in Junior Bible Quiz as well as youth group had serious problems.

As early as her elementary school years, Sarah battled suicidal thoughts. In high school she went binge drinking with friends. When she began injuring herself in college by cutting, friends convinced her to seek medical treatment.

In counseling, a psychiatrist prescribed antidepressants. However, Sarah didn’t reveal the homosexual feelings behind her struggle. Her parents, Duane and Marla Mourer, never suspected anything amiss.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court released their decision to allow same-sex marriages in all states, regardless of the decisions of individual states. This decision has profound negative implications, far beyond what most people understand today. The dissenting opinions on the Supreme Court give an indication of the total disregard for law and thousands of years of history by the majority judges in the 5-4 decision.

It is important for the church to respond to this decision and give a clear understanding of what God’s Word has to say concerning these matters. Churches have an obligation to speak up for the God-ordained institution of marriage between one man and one woman, which remains blessed by God. Churches that celebrate this lawless decision are obviously not true churches of Jesus Christ. We call on believers who are unfortunate enough to be part of such false churches to leave and find a church that stands on the truth of God’s Word and offers love and forgiveness in Christ. Churches that are silent on the issue are hiding their light under a basket and not taking this opportunity to stand for the truth of God’s Word. We call on believers in churches that are silent on the issue of same-sex marriage to encourage their leaders to speak out for righteousness in this critical time.

Following is an official statement from the Assemblies of God, the largest Spirit-filled denomination in the world, concerning the recent Supreme Court decision. As part of the Assemblies of God fellowship, Life Church St. Louis will be speaking out and giving further clarity on godly responses to this decision in the future.

George O. Wood, AG general superintendent, releases a statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to allow same-sex marriages.

Ferguson and God’s Judgment Message Introduction

We’re in a message series called “Understanding the End Times.” As we go through this series, I trust you’re beginning to understand that as we study the end times, we are learning how to live here and now. Understanding the last days in which we live is essential to following Jesus today. Knowing what is going to happen at the end of this age encourages and guides us as we prioritize our lives for tomorrow.

God’s Word teaches us that those who are wise, live with eternity in mind. Those who are foolish live simply for the present. The times in which we live are unprecedented in the history of the human race.

Daniel 12:4 (NIV)  But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”
